Active Discipleship: The Practice of Prayer
"Listening to God”
(John 10:2-5)

Before you begin

Take a moment to pray and ask the Lord to speak to you through His Word, to give you wisdom and understanding of His Word, and to transform you according to His Word.

Read John 10:2-5.

As you read, consider these questions:

  • What is this text teaching me about God?
-How would you describe God (His character/nature) after reading this passage?

  • What is this text teaching me about me?
-How would you describe how God sees you after reading this passage?
-Is there a command to obey? Is there an example to follow? Is there a promise to claim? Is there a sin to avoid or confess? Is there a principle to apply?

  • How do I apply this text to my life?

Additional Questions: Feel free to pick any of the following questions to work through individually and with your house church. Don’t feel like you have to get through them all, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you during your time together.

Remember, as we open our hearts, our Bibles, and our lives, let’s be sure that our pursuit and discussions lead us to Jesus, His Word, personal honesty, and actual action in the ways we live & lead others.

1.  What are some of the biggest obstacles in your life that make it hard to slow down and listen for God? Where can you create space for hearing His voice?

2. Think about a time that God spoke to you through scripture, prayer, circumstances, or another person. How did you respond? What were the results?

3.The Shema teaches that listening to God also means obeying Him. What is one step of obedience God might be calling you to make right now? How might you invite others into that process with you?

Challenge: Set aside 5-10 minutes at least a few times this week to just be silent with God. Write down any impressions, scriptures, or other thoughts that come to mind.
